Stand With Planned Parenthood
The company I researched was Planned Parenthood. Their main purpose is to provide affordable reproductive health care, education, and advocacy in addition to working to advance global health. Their main purpose is their social good initiative- they want to improve access to quality affordable health care for people, as well as educate the community about safe sex, reproductive health, and family planning.
Planned Parenthood provides sexual and reproductive health care, education, information, and outreach to nearly five million women, men, and adolescents worldwide in a single year. Planned Parenthood health centers focus on prevention: 80 percent of their patients receive services to prevent unintended pregnancy. Also, Planned Parenthood provides more than 4.2 million tests and treatments for sexually transmitted infections, including more than 650,000 HIV tests.
I am not 100% certain how they use big data- I know they posed on their website that they partnered with DrivenData, a Harvard Innovation Lab-based data firm, on a Data Competition. The goal of the competition was to “bring the most talented minds in data research together to identify trends in reproductive health care.”
I imagine a lot of their data comes from their clients, such as the number of cervical cancer screenings done in a year. The data would have to be anonymous numbers to protect patient identities.
I would guess that the way they use big data relates back to improving care for their patients and improving education efforts for the community.
Looking at their privacy policy, they can collect information about their uses through them making an account, making a donation, users contributing content to the Online Services, using interactive features on the Online Services, making a purchase, signing an online petition, applying for a job or for a volunteer or internship opportunity, sign up to receive updates and other communications from Planned Parenthood, enter a contest, sweepstakes, or promotion; participate in polls or surveys, and/or otherwise contact them with a question, comment, or request. They can collect information such as people’s names, photographs, contact information, account information, demographic information, transaction-related information, information you provide when submitting an employment/volunteer application, and information you provide when you request information or contact them.
Planned Parenthood is definitely not a start-up; they have been an established organization since 1916. Planned Parenthood benefits from the public good by furthering their purpose- they want to improve sexual education and health care provisions for the public.
It is interesting to see how organizations like this that we don’t usually associate with big data use big data to further their purpose and goal. It just goes to show how useful big data can be to a company.
I can see how data coming from this company’s clients, as well as statistics from other sources could help them continue to grow as a successful company. If they can truly see a change in sexual education and health care provisions I would find this to be very beneficial to them as a company.
Great example of public good! I agree with the previous comment. Perhaps they receive data from their clients. Maybe even just their demographic data can help identify where majority of their test and treatments are going towards, and potentially lead to preventions of those diseases. Great job!
