Social Network Analysis – Facebook

When I think about social network analysis, Facebook is the main social network that comes to mind. I usually get majority of my news and information through Facebook from others. I am not the one to post or share much unless I find it very interesting. When I do post it may be to update my Facebook account, so the pictures are up to date, or I’ll share a post that relates to my life. And when I do so, it’s mainly my close family and friends that comment on the post. I do often receive likes from friends I have not kept in touch with in a while. I believe that sharing what my friends post keeps my Facebook friends and I connected in a way. But, the actual groups that I am involved in such as “Wolfpack Student” keeps me separate and only connected to those in the group.

Having over 1,200 friends, it almost becomes overwhelming. A lot of them are friends from middle school and high school or someone I accepted because we had a decent amount of mutual friends at the time. Now I have to see their news feed everyday when I don’t really care to. Facebook does do a good job at putting the main people that I am connected to at the top of my news feed every time I check it. This way, I see what I am most interested in first.

I am typically fine with Facebook using my information for research or whatever can help them out. I am putting it out on the internet, so I’m expecting anyone to see it.

It is interesting that you mention Wolfpack Students because I have noticed that since are so many members of that group, that there is minimal overlap in ideas. (Except for when there is a sports rival playing against NC State or something of that nature). Of course, some unite over political beliefs, but I often see more disagreement on that page than agreement in terms of what is posted.

I find that I also get overwhelmed with posts of things happening with people I knew in my younger years and I really don’t care what they are or aren’t doing. I have found my self unfollowing people instead of deleting them just because there are too many posts. I, too, am a member of the “Wolfpack Students” Facebook group and in some ways it does allow me to feel separate from some of the other people on my Facebook, because this something that I can see and that many of the people on my Facebook can see unless I show them. Awesome post!
