Heifer International

Heifer international is a non-profit that specializes in sustainable practice in order to fight poverty world wide. The organization started simply as an exchange program where you could buy a cow from Heifer and they would send a cow to a family in an impoverished country. The program is one that has had growing success and support after its establishment nearly 50 years ago. But like all non profits, there is little room for advertising and marketing, so heifer must use big data and social media to create lasting relationships with its shareholders. The use of open data is something that most every business can take advantage of, but non profits especially. International non-profits like Heifer are only operating because of a drastic need in other countries. Though the goal is to end hunger in a sustainable way, the root of the problem most times is beyond hunger. Most times there is some kind of corrupt or closed government that breeds this poverty need for relief from outside countries. as for Heifer international they are creating open pathways through interpersonal communication that can lead to more open structures for data exchange in the future. Most of the areas that are being served by the organization are also at a loss because they do not have access to market. By opening the door to big data and the internet in these places, it can make it easier for under privileged areas to pull themselves away from the restrictions of poverty.
